Description
This northwest native ranges from British Columbia all the way down to northern California and east into Idaho and Montana. 3-10′ tall, the new growth is green, turning red to purple in color with age. Dark green oval shaped leaves with serrated edges are a favorite of elk and many other grazers, including livestock. White or pinkish colored flowers. Prefers full sun and well-drained sites with soil that is low in nutrients. A great choice for erosion control and nitrogen fixing, it also provides habitat for many birds and small mammals.
