Description
A rounded shrub growing 6-8′ with thick leathery gray-green foliage. Small yellow flowers are followed by yellow or red fruits. The scaly white bark with orange dots gives a “rusty” appearance. It is rather slow growing, tolerating poor soils and high salt content in rocky soils of open forest banks and meadows. Has nitrogen-fixing capabilities. The foliage is a popular food source for deer and elk, while bears and grouse prefer the berries. Native Americans combined the berries with dried buffalo meat to make Pemmican.
