Large, straight tree to 100 feet or more. Deciduous conifer with soft light-green needles that turn yellow and drop in the fall. Appears dead in winter. Habitat is mountain slopes and valleys on porous, gravely, sandy and loamy soils. Needs more moisture than the Ponderosa pine. Wood is hot and clean burning. Native Americans used young roots to lash together birch bark canoes.

Tall, slender, conical tree, growing to 50 feet. One and a half inch needles, 3-4 inch cones. Habitat is the sub-alpine zone to the tree line of high mountains and drier interior regions. Because it is slender, it can be used for groupings in the landscape. Native Americans used it’s boughs for flooring and bedding.

Long-lived large tree to 200′. Requires more water than Ponderosa Pine, but it is often found in the same areas. Needles are 1″ long; cones are 2-4″ with distinctive bracts. Thick bark makes them somewhat fire-resistant when mature. It is an important timber and wildlife tree.
