CAREX PRAEGRACILIS – Clustered Field Sedge 10 cubic inch

One of the most versatile and adaptable of the wetland species, the Clustered Field Sedge grows up to approximately 12-16″, spreading by rhizomes to form a thick groundcover. It will tolerate occasional mowing to create a turf-like appearance and can be a water-wise substitute for the traditional grass turf. Inundation, drought, heat, cold and foot traffic don’t slow it down much either. An excellent choice for meadow restoration, it is also a good forage species for livestock. Commonly found along disturbed roadsides, where it benefits from the road-salt application and is commonly one of the first to regrow after fire.

SAGITTARIA LATIFOLIA, Arrowhead 10 cubic inch

Typically found in shallow wetlands, growing 3-4′ tall and in a colony ranging 6′-65′. Prefers full sun but can exist in partial shade. Broad, wedge-shaped leaves with white, 3-lobed flowers July – September tolerate a wide range of water levels including inundation, water currents and waves. Also known as Duck Potato, Indian Potato or Wapato, the starchy, edible tuber it is used traditionally and celebrated by Native Americans. It is noted that the Duck Potato is likely what sustained the Lewis and Clark explorers through a very cold and wet winter of 1805-1806 as supplies became scarce and wild game was limited. The tubers are also a favorite food of muskrats, beavers and geese and ducks in more shallow waters.

A rush-like perennial that spreads by rhizomes. Grows 1-3′ tall in tufts of erect, slender stems with few leaves. Thrives in perennially moist to saturated soil conditions with seasonal standing water. Tolerant of alkali soils. Important for water fowl and small mammals.

Native from BC south through CA, found commonly in freshwater wetlands but also tolerates saline conditions. It is considered evergreen with a coarse leaf texture, and fibrous root system that prefers fine to medium soils. Yellow inconspicuous flowers in early summer.

This low-maintenance wetland plant grows 3-5′ in ideal conditions. Showy individual seed head tufts turn coppery in the late summer and persist in to winter. Found naturally in wet meadows and swamps. Woolgrass is an important food source for water fowl. It does not spread via rhizomes, but by seed. Native Americans used the fibers for weaving mats and bags and the fluffy seed heads were used to stuff pillows.
